Dr. Mara Silverman earned her B.A. from University of Michigan and her M.A. and Ph.D. in clinical Psychology from City University of New York at City College. Throughout her doctoral program she received clinical training at City College's Psychological Center, which provides counseling services to CCNY students and West Harlem communities. At the center, she worked with children, adolescents, adults, and families. In addition, she held a Staff Psychologist position at the Student Counseling Center at the Graduate Center at City University of NY, where she provided short-term individual psychotherapy to graduate students. She did her pre-doctoral internship at UCLA's Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital in the department of psychiatry. There she had intensive exposure to a wide variety of clinical experiences with children, adolescents and families, and did an 8-month rotation on the inpatient adolescent eating disorders unit. She has been in private practice in Los Angeles for over two decades and has continued to treat eating disorders on an outpatient basis. Dr. Silverman completed a one-year advanced psychoanalytic psychotherapy training program at the New Center for Psychoanalysis and a year-long intensive trauma training program at the Sensorimotor Psychotherapy Institute, which emphasizes "body-oriented interventions" in the treatment of trauma. She has also completed a nine-month course on complex trauma through the International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation (ISSTD). She is also trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing), the fundamentals of clinical hypnosis, mindful meditation, and she integrates these techniques in her clinical work as a way to reduce stress and increase a sense of well-being.
